Breaker Keeps Tripping? What It Means and What to Do

By the electricians at Despot Electric · Serving all of Delaware

A tripping breaker is annoying, but it is also your electrical system protecting you. Here is what it means and how our electrical repair team tracks down the cause.

Cause 1: Overloaded circuit

Too many devices on one circuit — space heaters, hair dryers and window AC units are the usual suspects. The fix is moving loads or adding a dedicated circuit.

Cause 2: Short circuit

A hot wire touching a neutral, often from a damaged cord, a failed device or a loose connection in a box. The breaker trips instantly and may make a pop. Stop using the circuit and call us.

Cause 3: Ground fault

Common in kitchens, baths and outdoors when moisture reaches wiring. GFCI breakers and outlets trip to protect you.

Cause 4: A worn-out breaker

Breakers wear out. A breaker that trips with almost nothing on it, or feels hot, often just needs circuit breaker replacement.

When it is an emergency

If the breaker trips and you smell burning, see scorch marks or hear buzzing at the panel, do not reset it. Call our 24/7 emergency electricians at (888) 633-7804.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to keep resetting a breaker?

Once or twice is fine. If it keeps tripping, something is wrong — stop and call an electrician.

Why does the breaker trip when nothing is on?

Usually a failing breaker, a short in the wiring or a device with an internal fault.

Can a tripping breaker cause a fire?

The breaker prevents fire — but the underlying cause can be dangerous if ignored.
