Storm Season Electrical Safety Checklist for Delaware Homeowners

From Fenwick Island to Bellefonte, storm season brings lightning, flooding and outages. Use this checklist from our electricians to keep your home safe.

Before the storm

• Install whole house surge protection at the panel.
• Test your standby generator — or schedule an install before the season.
• Test every GFCI outlet with the button.
• Check exterior outlets have in-use weatherproof covers.
• Trim branches near the service drop (call the utility for anything touching the lines).

During an outage

• Unplug sensitive electronics so the restoration surge does not fry them.
• Never run a portable generator indoors or plug it into a wall outlet — use a proper transfer switch or inlet.

After the storm

• If any electrical equipment got wet, do not turn it on. Call our 24/7 emergency electrician.
